Great Lakes Comic-Con: Celebrating Comics and Collectibles in Metro Detroit

The Great Lakes Comic-Con (GLCC) is a premier annual event in the Metro-Detroit area, dedicated to comic books, toys, and collectibles. Since its inception in 2010, GLCC has grown into a significant gathering for collectors, dealers, and fans, fostering a vibrant community centered around a shared passion for pop culture.

Origins and Growth

GLCC began with a modest vision: to create a local event in Southeastern Michigan, primarily Macomb County, where enthusiasts could buy and sell their favorite collectibles. The inaugural show took place on July 18, 2010, at a VFW hall in Roseville, Michigan, featuring 24 dealers and attracting 63 attendees. Encouraged by this initial interest, organizers Mike and Amy DeSantis refined their approach, leading to steady growth in both size and attendance.

Mission and Community Engagement

Beyond commerce, GLCC is committed to supporting children’s literacy and related charities. The convention collaborates with organizations like Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States, aiming to provide all children access to books and the joy of reading.

Expansion and Milestones

Over the years, GLCC has expanded its offerings:

  • Guest Appearances: Since 2011, the convention has featured industry talents, including comic creators and media personalities, enhancing the attendee experience.

  • Venue Changes: In 2013, the event moved to Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan, to accommodate a growing audience. By 2014, it settled into the Expo Center at Macomb Community College, where it continues to thrive.

  • Themed Events: Starting in 2016, GLCC introduced themes, such as the 1980s pop culture, to enrich the convention atmosphere.

Current Status

As of 2020, GLCC celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of continuous growth and community engagement. The event has doubled in size since 2013, with attendance surpassing 5,000 in February 2020. This success is attributed to the unwavering support of attendees, exhibitors, artists, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and guests.

Looking Ahead

GLCC remains dedicated to providing a family-friendly environment that celebrates the rich culture of comics and collectibles. With a focus on community involvement and a passion for the arts, the convention continues to be a highlight in Michigan’s pop culture calendar.
